We drove to Galatina from our accommodation at a Masseria in the area looking for some dinner. What a beautiful little town! The historic centre is well-preserved and looked after, and we had a very pleasant couple of hours walking around. We ended up eating in a small piazza, just local fast food - fresh, delicious and cheap. Unfortunately there was a mass in the Basilicata of St Peter & St Paul, so we didn’t go in, and it was closed on the way back.. but it looked magnificent. I’ve seen someone describe it as a mini-Lecce.. it’s certainly extremely handsome.

Like a mini-Lecce. Galatina is a well kept little town with a beautiful old town to walk and get lost in.

Have a decent amount of qualityshops and restaurants.

I stayed the afternoon and evening! Parked my car in the center where there are a decent amount of parkinglots.

Galatina is a fine town in which to walk around for a bit. Saints Peter and Paul Gothic Church is quite stunning as we took many photos. We unfortunately missed the even more famous Santa Catarina Cathedral in terms of our timing.

What we didn't miss is something we may not have supposed to yet see: a very interesting town museum with a most eclectic and historically panoramic vastness of displays in various contexts that was overall quite impressive. We spent over an hour going form room to room with not a single person insight, either tourist or employee.

The whole complex is under a renovation and seems affiliated with the local university/college arts department as well. As we were finishing our very unusual tour, we heard voices from a single small office somewhere but weren't quite sure precisely where. I asked when we went out if it was ok to enter and nobody thought it was a problem. Either we had a very lucky experience or they are very casual about allowing those who wish to enter do so. There were no signs of any kind in Italian or any other language that we could see suggesting entry was not allowed.

If it's formally reopened when readers arrive, we suggest you not miss this Galatina gem not yet formally listed not this site or in an of my many tour books. If you are allowed entrance under similar circumstances as ours, it's well worth the time.

Oh and of course, currently formally free of charge.

After having spent a few days exploring Lecce, we decided to spend the day driving and visiting some of the other cities and towns outside Lecce. Our first stop was the Centro Storico in Galatina. We wanted to visit the Basilica di Santa Caterina di Alessandria as well as the Chiesa Madre dei Santi Pietro e Paolo a Galatina, but both happened to be closed. We ended up having a nice seafood lunch at Anima & Cuore, followed by a walk around the Centro Storico. The place was pretty quiet (very few people) and most of the shops were closed.

We enjoyed walking around this town which is full of medieval churches, winding streets and green parks. Its main attraction is the Basilica di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria which has stunning frescoes on its walls and ceilings as well as a selection of paintings from Giotto's school. However, the town also has several shops selling delicious local biscuits and small tarts. We were lucky enough to buy some that were still hot from the oven. They were delicious.

This relatively small town hides a lot of little gems. Since it is a whole lot less frequented by tourists, you are likely to be one of the few tourists in the area.

A bit away from Lecce, but very centrale positioned between Ionian and Adriatic sea. Historic centre full of ancient churches, good restaurants, cafeterias, monuments. Been there for a week and had a marvellous stay. Explore the region from this city, it has lots to offer!

The Basilica and environs are first rate. There are some other nice facades along Victor Emanuelle and some narrow streets. It looks really as though it needs a lot of renovation to older buildings, but not worth a visit other than to the Basilica.

There is little to attract anyone to this town besides the Basilica and adjoining cloister and refectory. These alone make a trip well worthwhile. Parking can be somewhat of a lottery and only the Basilica is well signposted.
