A fascinating experience
2020. febr. • Családi
My dad's girlfriend is Italian and she booked the visit and translated for the owner.
I was amazed that the grotto kept a steady temperature for winter and for summer so the grotto was surprisingly warm and cosy despite the chilly winter wind outside.
The owner gave us a thorough tour of the place and showed us all kinds of interesting things, from the photos of the grotto families, to the inventive toys that the children used to play, to his son's beautiful artwork that was up for sale.
The owner was especially excited talking to us as I was filming with my DSLR and he was eager to have a video of his grotto aiming for an English audience. I was promised to send him a link when I finish it so wish me luck on it!

Funny and cosy

We had a very unique experience with Carmelo telling us about the story of the grotta where his granpa lived. He showed us all the material used by the family to survive. Carmelo is very friendly and funny. Unfortunately he doesn't speak English but I am Italian so I could translate for my Dutch boyfriend. We reccommand it to have a full Sicilian experience.ciao!

Fascinating insight into cave life
2019. jún. • Romantikus
A rutta ri Ron Carmelu is a fascinating insight into life in Scicli's cave houses. The owner (whose Grandfather lived in the cave house along with seven other family members, a donkey and some chickens) gave us a tour and a history of the cave settlements in the town. He was full of enthusiasm and the little museum offers a unique glimpse of what life would have been like, although I suspect it is probably rather more full of stuff than it actually would have been as he seems to have collected all manner of period pieces for display.

Super insight to Sicilian heritage

Popped in here by chance and had a wonderful visit. The owner carefully explains the grotto and way of life ( All in Italian) but we followed enough. Could not help buying some of the home made pieces he so keenly displays. Worth the visit

Very cool museum & vibes

This is a preserved cave house from the 1800s/1900s that the grandson of the original owner will give you a warm & spirited tour of. See the loom, the hay mattress, the wood oven, the place where the donkey & chicken lived alongside the 6 kids & 2 adults. All the details of lifestyle lived up until not all that long ago. Very very cool place & very kind man who shows you around who is also an artisan who sells small wooden toys & sculptures as well as herbs & capers etc! Entry is only 2.50! & the little shop is great! Really good energy. So happy we went. Total highlight. You could def bring kids.

Fabulous seeing how the sicilians lived centuries ago, this was an amazing display of what life was like.

This is a great life like museum, if you are into being taken back in time, a fabulous display of Sicilian life centuries ago, made from used items and a dedication from one man to recreate a little piece of history. well worth the visit if you enjoy feeling like you are walking through history. I really enjoyed it and it would be some thing great to do with children.

Wonderful small display of local antiques
2019. márc. • Családi
We saw reviews on TripAdvisor and thought it would be neat to see this little museum. We are glad we decided to go, it was a small display of local antiques that this sweet man has collected over his lifetime. We don’t speak Italian so there was difficulty understanding all he was trying to explain to us, but he was patient and kind and we enjoyed it all anyways. Interesting and fun find.

we were simply walking around and started following the signs for the grotto di Ron Carmelo and...we stepped into Ron Carmelo himself!
what a great gentleman which dedicated us the greatest time and made us go through hundreds of years of local history and heritage.
the grotto is just unbelievable and truthful to the life it was.

the presepe is a work of art and Ron Carmelo guidance is second to none.

if you are into the real deal, until you can find some, don’t miss this place!

A ‘must do’ in Scicli
2018. máj.
If you are curious about how people used to live in Scicli you must visit this little museum in an ancient cave house. It brings the past alive in a way a large museum cannot.

We found this little museum on TA and walked up one morning. It’s very like the museum caves in Matera and apparently people also lived in the caves here until after the last war. We had to wait a few minutes for the previous visitors to finish but then we had Raimondo’s full attention and were shown round the two rooms where his grandparents had lived. There were a lot of artefacts, quite a few of which we didn’t recognise.
Raimondo seemed only to speak Italian, which was fine for us, but I did feel he was a bit too keen to get to the bit where he would suggest we buy some of the many items on sale which had been made by him and his daughter.
We asked lots of questions which he was happy to answer and I think you need to do that to get full value from your visit. The visit wasn’t expensive in any case and we bought some interesting postcards as well.
