About
The medieval Church of St. Lawrence is located in the city centre of Lohja. This late-gothic style church was built somewhere between 1470 and 1490 and it is the 3rd largest medieval parish church in Finland. The rustic and naive murals on the walls and valves from early 16th century make the church one of the most valuable medieval buildings in Finland. The murals depicted biblical stories for the illiterate population. Prior to the Protestant Reformation and the introduction of Lutheranism into Finland, the church served as the Roman Catholic Church. The great wooden crucifix hanging from the vault roof is from the 15th century and it is believed that it´s made in the city of Turku, Finland.

If you are Lohja area, remember to make short stop here. They have also concerts like Xmas carrolls here too.
Finnish lutheran churches differ from Central European ones, especially from catholic ones. Finnish churches are very plain, no golden glitter. Lohja church has beautiful paintings on limestone background, as there is a limestone mine almost directly underneath it, worth also visiting.
If you can't make to Lohja, there is another very similar church close to Helsinki Airport with same name and look.

This is a really beautiful old stone church almost in the middle of Lohja city. It is so tall that it can easily be seen from the main street. Free parking place just outside the church.

We were married in St Lauri's church so it will always have a specific place in oir hearts. St Lauri's church is worth visiting especially during Christmas, live candles with traditional Christmas songs.

One of the old churches in Finland that have their old original paintings restored - from the catholic times. Primitive educational paintings - painted for the people who could not read... in 15th century. Beautiful!

Beautiful old church in the middle of Lohja. Parking all around is available. Lovely inside with stained glass, and murals painted on the walls. Lots of history, so read up in advance, as there is not much literature available in English.

The church is one of the biggest in Finland, but of course not as big as many of the cathedrals elsewhere in the world. Great medieval paintings (restored in 1960:s). It is interesting to notice that also the wooden roof is original in the sense that there has never been a fire in the church!

The floor and basement is renewed, as is the organ. The interior is thus not completely in its original, medieval shape.
