Public art in the countryside
2020. jan.
This brightly painted chapel is a lovely place to reflect on the countryside below. It was created to be a respite, a purpose the artists maintained.

A must when here!

Utterly strange but yet peaceful. Walk down to this chapel from the town of La Morra. Up again is not as funny! Worth a visit.

If you are in the area worth visiting. The church where the production of Barolo has been prayed for for years. Interesting, not great.

So Fun

Great little side trip as we waited for our reserved time at a vineyard. Look for the "Big Benches" throughout Piedmont as well.

Colourful chapel
2017. máj. • Baráti
Beautiful views over La Morra and some of the most important vineyards can be had from the Cappella del Barolo. The Chapel itself is colourful. If you are lucky, the doors are open.

very unique chapel!

It is a steep walk down from La Morra, but nicely located in the fields. Bautiful looks of the surroundings.....photo opportunity on a clear day is unique!

A local treasure

It is a colorful landmark, and a popular photo spot on one of several biking and waking trails in the area. The brilliant colors; red, yellow, green and purple, stand out amongst the green vineyards and are visible for miles.

This is called the Chapel of Barolo, but it was never used as a church, it was never consecrated. It was built in 1914 or 1915 as the chapel of Santa Maria delle Grazie, but it was abandoned even before its consecration.

It served as a Ciabot, a shelter for workers and animals during bad weather. Because of its shape and original intent, it was referred to as “the chapel.”

When the Ceretto family bought 6 hectares of prestigious vineyards of the Brunate cru in 1976, the chapel was included. It was in ruins after years of neglect. A few years later, during an exhibition in La Morra, the family met the English artist, David Tramlett, and asked him to restore the chapel. He was so happy that he involved his friend, artist Sol LeWitt.

LeWitt took responsibility for the external renovation, making it playful, lively, giving it a new life.

Tremlett’s interior decorations are warm and serene.

It looked essentially like this in 1997 or 1999 when we first visited La Morra, but it was faded. Today it has a fresh coat of paint inside and out.
