Just a few blocks from the center of town, down a few interesting side streets, sits this small fountain. Locals use it to rinse their hands or to take a drink. Nice visit for dog lovers.

The Fontana delle Anatre (or Fountain of the Ducks) is located in the Piazza del Duca which is sandwiched between the 16th century Palazzo del Duca, which was home to the Dukes of Urbino, and the Rocco Roveresca.

The Fountain's design is attributed to the Venetian Stefano Di Tommaso and was constructed around the turn of the 17th century. The Fountain features a six sided water basin constructed of pink marble. Rising out of the water basin is a four sided stone structure with stone face masks on each side with volutes in between that hold up the round upper water basin tier. There are also a number of small stone ducks sitting on the top of the main water basin.

It is said that the Fountain was built to celebrate the drying up of the wetland marshes near Senigallia and the arrival of the Roveresco Aqueduct in Senigallia. The Lions which are situated on four sides of the Fountain were an addition at some stage after the initial construction.

Of note is the fact that the Fountain is off centre in the Piazza. This was to accommodate military parades that were undertaken in the Piazza.

This grand, Baroque fountain is located in the centre of Piazza della Madonna, in front of the Basilica and surrounding by the wings of the Apostolic Palace. You can’t miss it.
It was built between 1604 - 1614 by Carlo Maderno and his uncle Giovanni Fontana. Maderno would later become the chief architect for St Peter’s in Rome.
The elaborate decoration on the fountain includes winged dragons, dolphins, mermen, ornate spouts, heraldic crests, and cherubs.
Both times that I have visited Loreto, there has been a chalk artist who does the most amazing artwork and religious scenes on the pavers around the fountain. If you have kids with you, they will probably be fascinated to see him at work.

The fountain is a good starting point from which to explore the ancient town of Matelica. It takes central position in the main piazza and is a large, white, stone fountain with an octagonal shape.
Built in l587, it is designed around a raised central basin and a large, single pedestal fountain in the middle. Four figures riding dolphins rise up from the water. Three of them are sea-gods, although none of them look particularly god-like or imposing. They look more like they are frolicking around, joy-riding on sea creatures. The most curious one is a mermaid-like woman with her back arched, her chest thrust out and cupping her breasts. Amusingly, jets of water spurt in large arcs from her breasts.
The fourth figure is a large, rather vicious bird on the back of a strange creature. It seems to be angrily pecking out the creature’s eye out but it’s hard to tell.
There’s a local story that if you walk around the fountain 7 times, anti-clockwise, you will be granted a wish. It’s a decent, medium-sized fountain so you will look a bit mad doing it.
More serious decoration is reserved for around the sides. Here you can see the coats of arms of various cardinals and the papal coat of arms of Sixtus V (look for the lion with a sash). Sixtus V was fond of a fountain. In Rome, he had new aqueducts built and ancient ones restored.
A dedication to Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the city's patron, was added in 1619.
Car parking in the piazza tends to diminish the fountain a little. Surrounding cars tend to block the view so that it doesn’t stand out as a central feature in the way it once would have. Large concrete bollards around the base are a practical measure to ensure that no-one reverses accidentally into the fountain but the downside is that people can’t gather and sit around the base as they do in many other towns.
