- Mark H75 contributionsBeautiful Italian castle set amongst rolling hills. Wide selection of restaurants and photo opportunities. Highly recommended. Prices at eateries are very reasonable considering the surroundings.Written September 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gervin38Island of Malta, Malta39 contributionsThis castle houses some exquisite masterpieces which are not to be missed, including important collections of Renaissance art by Raphael, Titian, Piero Della Francesca and more. The castle has a chapel and several rooms, including the āStudioloā, that reflect Duke Federico's interest in Classical and humanistic studies. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, built for Duke Federico III da Montefeltro.Written October 15, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mairwen1United Kingdom9,563 contributionsThe Shrine of the Holy House is the main reason to visit Loreto, which is a small town and can be easily seen in a few hours.
This is one of the holiest and most visited pilgrim destinations in Italy because it contains the family home of Mary, mother of Jesus. This is where she grew up and where the Archangel Gabriel appeared and told her that she would become the Mother of God.
Itās a curious sight. The entire house is contained within a large, marble structure designed by Bramante at the back of the church. A one-way ramp allows you to walk through the house which is a very simple, stone affair.
How the house came to be here is the most curious story of all. The most popular tradition is that flights of angels transported it from Nazareth. According to another story, Crusaders saved it from the Turks who were about to capture Jerusalem in 1291. Another claims that the powerful Angeli family shipped it to Italy.
Interestingly, technology backs the authenticity of the house. The building materials can be identified as originating in the Holy Land and building techniques, cuts found in the stones and inscriptions confirm that this is very likely to be the real deal.
There is almost no information at the Sanctuary so itās helpful to read up on some of this beforehand or get a good guidebook.
Apart from the Holy House, the chapels at the back of the basilica have some beautiful artwork, including a painting of St Sebastian by Marche artist, Lorenzo Lotto.
TIPS:
* Photos are not allowed inside (although many people were ignoring this).
*Entry is free
No bare shoulders or midriff, no shorts or short dresses. No-one seemed to be enforcing this but take a wrap or scarf just in case.
GETTING THERE: We had a car which made the trip to Loreto very easy. The town centre is a ZTL area so you can't drive through it or park within the city walls. On a previous trip, we parked for free on the streets around the Porta Romana side. This was good because the street parking was free but we did have to walk about 15 minutes to the basilica. This time we used the Via Castelfidardo public carpark. It was convenient but it was paid parking and we had a lot of trouble with the metres which wouldnāt take our cards. In the end we had to change some money and use coins. Take coins and youāll be fine.Written December 17, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Plenty of restaurants on the side leading to the beach. A good atmosphere prevails, even when it gets relatively - not really - crowdedWritten July 16, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mairwen1United Kingdom9,563 contributionsPiazza del Popolo is centrally located in the heart of the city and is surrounded by a medieval palazzo, porticoes and the Gothic Church of St Francis. Thereās a lot to see here, concentrated in the one spot.
The two main historic sights are the church and the Palazzo dei Capitano de Popolo.
The 13th - 14th century palazzo is next to Melettiās. Itās the one with two clocks and a tall, central tower. We sat on the front steps in the sun here and soaked up the piazza atmosphere. Later we watched as a large wedding party arrived and then appeared on the Romeo-and-Juliet style corner balcony on the top floor for photos.
The monumental Church of St Francis was started in 1258 but took some 300 years to finish (entry is free).
Attached to it and fronting onto the piazza, is a long, verandah-like structure - the Loggia dei Mercanti. This was built by the powerful guild of wool merchants in the 16th century. A small craft market was being held in the loggia when we were there and we were able to watch an interesting display of fine, traditional lace-making.
The highlight in the piazza is the historic, Michelin listed Caffe Meletti. This is where the aromatic herbal liqueur, Meletti, was first created in 1870. Itās definitely something to try while in Ascoli Piceno.Written December 17, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Worth the 20 min walk up the hill in the sun. The cave gives it an extra depth and the stone piramides remembering the dead even more special. Never heard of it before visiting the Frassasi caves, I think people should see it once in their lifes with own eyes. Really recommend itWritten August 13, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- pc iTA67 contributionsThe caves are man-made, very extensive, and originally excavated by an ancient culture using very basic tools. If you are in the area, it is worth a visit. The guide was fluent in English and quite knowledgeable. Entrance fee was 8 EU. - Mairwen1United Kingdom9,563 contributionsThe Cathedral was our starting point for exploring the townās historic centre. Itās an imposing church with a 16th century facade that dominates Piazza Arringo.
It was a good place to begin. From the Cathedral, we did a looped walk, along Corso Mazzini to Piazza del Popolo, then Piazza Roma, and back to the Cathedral.
Unfortunately our Cathedral visit was limited because a mass was on. This isnāt ideal for seeing the church or crypt.
I was interested to see the Carlo Crivelli polyptych and the 14th century crypt, which has elaborate mosaic work and is supposed to be quite special, but it didnāt feel appropriate to stroll around so we stayed at the back of the church instead.
If I was visiting again, Iād check the mass times first.
The cathedral has beautiful artwork on the high vaulted ceiling. Itās a deep, rich blue, scattered with golden stairs and scenes of saints. However it was largely obscured by netting which was draped across almost the entire ceiling. It made it difficult to see the deep blue and gold painting.
I think this was due to renovation work but it may have been to prevent birds from lodging in the roof?
The ancient Baptistry is in a separate building, next door but, unlike the Cathedral, its not open very often and was closed when we were there.

We loved the peace and tranquility compared to civitanova where we were staying. However it is probably very busy during peak periods and parking would be hard.
