It is a small square close to the center and there is an underground car parking which is just outside the TLZ zone of Bologna.

Upon arrival into Bologna by rail you are almost immediately greeted by Porta Galliera, a 17th-century gate that was designed by Bartolomeo Provaglia in Baroque architectural style.

Historically, Porta Galliera served as an entry into the city and part of the defensive structure that included the old medieval wall that surrounded Bologna until they were brought down in the early 20th century as part of urban development projects. Luckily a number of old city gates, including the decorative Porta Galliera, were left standing so you can enjoy seeing them today.

Have a look-see upon arriving in Bologna or stop by for a few minutes on your way back to the rail station for an outbound journey.

This monument is in tribute to Luigi Galvani, an 18th century Italian doctor and scientist best known for his study of bioelectricity. The monument is a stone column, surmounted by a stone sculpture of Galvani. He is depicted in the typical attire of an 18th century gentleman wearing a frock coat and even a wig. He is standing over a column, looking at books and manuscripts placed on top.

I found this beautiful little chapel while wandering around the backstreets. It was closed. I revisited two more times, with no luck. There is no sign outside stating opening times, nor a contact number to arrange a visit.

Located in Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, just in front of the two towers, this marble statue of San Petronio, who was a bishop of Bologna in the 5th century, is something to note in passing, and maybe take a photograph. There are numerous statues of this saint throughout Bologna, the most noteworthy being the one situated in the Basilica of San Domenico, which was made by Michelangelo.

We came across this by accident as we were driving out to Monte Sole. We missed the area for parking so parked in a layby after the memorial. There was a hole in the fence so we walked through it and up to the memorial.
    It's in really good condition.
It's a shrine to the fallen resistance located in Sabbiuno. It's quite a hilly area and it's about 9km south of Bologna.
The memorial commemorates 100 partisans killed by the Nazi-Fascists in December 1944.
There are big stones each with a different partisans name on. Some of the names have worn off now.
The partisans were shot and then thrown over the edge so weren't found for a few months.
I am so glad we stubbled across this as it is a reminder of the horrible things that happened in the Second World War.

As the previous review points out these tombs are located in Bologna but not where they're currently shown on the Tripadvisor map. A couple of them are located at Piazza Malpighi - which is west, not north, of Piazza Maggiore.

This is the funeral monument of Rolandino de'Passeggeri, a master of law during medieval Bologna. The structure is a Neoclassical canopy with two levels. The lower level is empty, while the sarcophagus of de'Passeggeri is place on the upper level, sheltered by a roof.
