We didn't go up the towers as I am not keen on either heights or confined spaces but they are striking landmarks. Amazing to think how they were built all that time ago and what Bologna would have looked like with them all standing! Gorgeous in the evening with the swallows swooping around them and the sun setting...

This mediaeval tower was built by Accursio, a successful lawyer as part of his house. The huge clock face was added in 1444 and has told the time ever since. The tower is impressive despite being surrounded by some exquisite buildings in the Piazza Maggiore. A must see in Bologna.

If you wish to have a better view of Bologna, then pay the additional fee and go up the tower. Be warned that the stairway is narrow making it difficult for anyone to pass you if they are coming in the opposite direction. There are a few spots that is wider or has a room where you could rest for a while. As for the stairs, there is just one pole in the middle to hang on to for balance. The view from the top is good but not much better than from a lower level viewing site. If you buy your ticket at the basilica, you can get a refund if after the first few steps you find that you are claustrophobic or cannot manage the stairs. However if you buy your ticket from the red bus company, i5 is not refundable.

This is one of the noble standing towers in Bologna that dates back to the Middle Ages. It can be found at Corte de Galluzzi when exploring this area of the city centre. The tower was constructed in the middle of the 13th century and is 30 metres in height.

There is interesting history for the Galluzzi Tower along with sister towers Azzoguidi and Prendiparte Towers further north in the historic centre. Each having important defensive purposes during their day and time. Worth a read if this is something interesting and the tower is worth a brief look-see as well if passing by and interested in historic medieval structures like the towers of Bologna.

Torre Azzoguidi (Altabella Tower) is one of the noble towers of Bologna that remains standing. It was constructed in the 12th century and is 61 metres tall, making it the second tallest in the city after Torre Asinelli. You will find it along Via Altabella. It is also very near Torre Prendiparte and Guidozagni which -you can see just a couple minutes walk. Worth a look-see if you are wanting to see some of Bologna's famous medieval towers scattered around the city centre.

This gate is slightly different. It still has the simplistic brickwork and oval entrances to each end but it's very narrow and thin whereas the rest are mostly square. It also has a much larger square peak which is wider than it's walls. It's also still in very good condition as are most of them
