This imponent square has some elements which recall about Venice, such as the decorations of the palaces and the winged lions. However, it’s a fantastic point to start your tour of the pretty (and underrated) town of Udine.

When on our annual holiday in Carinthia we like to visit Udine, because it is a splendid historic Italian town, not yet overrun by tourists. There are many places to enjoy the architecture, sit down with a coffee, or a delicious snack and generally get a taste of the Italian way of life. But all this come together in Piazza Giacomo Mateotti, only steps from Via Mercatovecchio (now pedestrianized). Historic buildings, some with lingering frescos, a terrific 16th century church, bars, shops, restaurants and the Italians getting on with their daily life, walking, talking, shopping, sitting down with a coffee or a crodino; the real outdoor living room of Udine.

On the northern side of the Piazza Libertà, stands the Loggia and Tempietto of San Giovanni dating to the 16th century with at its top the Clock tower, dating to the same period and very similar to the one in Venice's main square.

Obviously the principal street in the Old Town in Udine. It has quite a few old and impressive buildings. Certainly worth the walk

We tried to see this and failed. We even went in the bank and asked. Apparently it is only open on a very few days of the year and the bank staff don't know when it will next be open. A shame as it looks interesting on TripAdvisor.

Arco Bollani, an arch built in 1556 by the famous architect Palladio and marking the entrance to the castle hill. Above the arche is the Lion of St Mar's symbol of Venice's rule over the city in the past

This A good size piazza in the central Udino. Decent bus connections and plenty of parking spaces. Very regularly park.

This gate into the historic city of Udine and the tower next to it are reminder of more troubled times when cities had to be fortified to keep out attackers and also to regulate trade. It is well preserved and worth a visit if you are in Udine.

Although one cannot find / see anymore the middle age defensive walls, it’s still possible to have an idea how were the entrances in those walls by looking at this tower. On the one hand they should allow the entrance and the exit of the merchants and people in general, on the other hand they should also protect the city in case of enemy attacks. Enjoy!

Together with the other surviving gates, this tower and gate is a remarkable testimony of the last and largest circle of walls, which over time have surrounded Udine (five consecutive circles). It's one of the thirteen doors that opened in the last circle. Such circle dates from the fourteenth century (but it is completed only under the rule of Venice, in the fifteenth century), and in the end - as in almost all Italian cities - is demolished, in the 19th century (especially after 1880).
Of the thirteen original gates, only four remain standing - except for error - so the historical and architectural value of this one and the other three gates is remarkable.
And in any case, its presence serves to reinforce in citizens and visitors the memory of the past aspect of Udine, which otherwise it would be even more difficult to keep alive.

we passed in this place after a business meeting and the owners welcomed us with great warmth and an expanse of ideas for Christmas gifts from chocolates to sweets to biscuits but also cushions with zodiac signs, music boxes and much more. We couldn't leave there without buying something local like gubana, a local cake for those who love sweets. Personally I chose dark black chocolate. Should it happen to return to Udine, it will be an obligatory stop even just to enjoy a wonderful coffee.
