Unfortunately, it wasn't possible to go inside, but from outside cathedral is beautiful with a nice square in front of it

Piazza San Giacomo is the best square in Udine, worth a five point rating in its own right (see my review), it is the outdoor living room of Udine, but the crown of this Piazza goes to the magnificent 16th century church, Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo, tucked away in the corner of the square. However, this church is closed between 12.00 and 16.00, to be taken into account when planning a visit. Pictures say more than a thousand words. I will add some to this review, an easy five point rating.

We managed to visit at the second time of trying. The first time it should have been open, we asked in the duomo and they said it was closed due to a lack of volunteers.
Anyway, it has a beautiful sarcophagus and lovely frescoes. Free entry with donations. There is an A4 information sheet in English but the volunteer in duty was very keen to conduct us on a tour in Italian. She was very informative and we got a lot more from the visit.
No photos at all allowed, so not sure how others have got photos on TripAdvisor.

This little 18c church has a noble exterior and a gorgeous interior with several spectacular paintings. Definitely worth a visit if it's open.

The classic facade gives way to a beautiful interior. The church was filled with people praying: A devotional sanctuary.

As a memorial of the World War I, the temple should be visited, to remember the atrocities of any war. It’s a vast temple with an impressive dome but as an architectural exercise it’s probably too much marked by the dictatorial style. Enjoy!

We discovered this modest church building while walking the Via Aquileia and stepped inside. Although this was a "random" church, somewhere in Udine, not the famous Duomo or the San Giacomo church, it turned out to be a splendid church, built in the 15th century, with impressive ceiling frescos. The church has had several patrons, but is now the church of the Holy Virgin of Carmine. Worth a visit.

Just before finishing the climb along the road to the Piazzale Castello, the Chiesa Santa Maria di Castello is encountered. This place of worship was already mentioned in the 12th century; the current building was finished in the 16th century. Unfortunately the church was closed that day, but I want to recommend this landmark on the hill in Udine.

This church has extensive frescos and is worth a few minutes as it is near to many other sights. There was not a soul . . . or attendant there.
