Ski & Snowboard Areas
An infinite snowy area that begins at 1,524 metres, in Valtournenche, embraces Breuil-Cervinia, rises up to 3,480 metres of Plateau Rosà, touches the 4,000 m peak of Piccolo Cervino, climbes up to 4,478 m to the top of the Cervino. An area where the infinite snow continues on the Swiss side to Zermatt. An area where the snow is the setting of sport, holidays and fun. The tourism vocation of Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche had it’s beginning more than two hundred years ago. Excursionists and academics were the pioneers of a tourism that united sport, scientific study and intellectual exchange. In 1936, a new Breuil-Cervinia was created. The construction of the first cable car was a cutting-edge work of engineering excellence. The Hotel Gran Baita situated at the foot of the slopes, with the cable car departure station annexed to it, anticipates by over half a century the concept of an integral complex for skiing. Breuil-Cervinia became the Queen of the snow. From sport to cinema, politics and commerce, those who count meet here. Innovation, in Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche, is the key word. New ways to practice sport, new ways to enjoy a holiday, new services to allow more free time. The technology is not limited to the rapid lift systems, but also to the territorial fibre optic network that allows the information to be transmitted in real time. Time and space dimensions have changed thanks to the e-skipass, to the keycard and to the hotel reservation system via the internet. 350 thousands web navigators every month visiting the site to check out the webcams, weather reports, lift status and snow conditions. In Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche, collaboration between the operators in the area guarantees guests quality and state of the art solutions.

We pre-booked this experience prior to our trip as a group of 8 people. We visited in mid February, UK half term and found this to be a quiet week to visit the Italian Alps. Likewise, it was a very quiet day on the Skyway and we managed to ascend and descend without any queues.

We planned our ascent for 11.30am and at the ticket desk we were advised to visit the Pavillion on the way down and head straight to the top, Punta Hellbroner, where we could stay for two hours.

The scenery was absolutely breathtaking with the cable car rotating throughout the whole journey offering views across the Mont Blanc range and surrounding mountains. At Punta Hellbroner we were able to access viewing decks which offered 360 degrees views which was quite an experience!

As it was my husband’s birthday, we visited the bistro and ordered champagne to celebrate. When the staff realised that it was his birthday, we were given a complimentary birthday cake which was such a nice touch. Everyone was so friendly.

On our descent, we stopped at the Pavilion and sat on the deckchairs, taking in the views and enjoying a drink from the restaurant whilst the sunshine shine around us. Yes, the experience is a little costly for a group, however, I would recommend highly that you visit if you have the opportunity to. We made wonderful memories here.

The guided tour was great! It was informative, engaging, and fun. Our guide did an amazing job at including everyone in the tour and was very funny too. The castle was so beautifully preserved inside and out. A must see

A beautiful castle, unfortunately raining on the day of our visit, limited our appreciation. That said it is a small castle beautifully decorated with lots of period furniture and in very good condition. We had a male guide who was also very good.

Great walk, not too difficult and not too long. Waterfalls are always beautiful and impressive and here you have a good opportunity to see them.

Roman remains are scattered around Aosta. This is by far the most impressive.

The Roman theatre is mainly in ruins but is dominated by the still-standing 22-metre-high south facade which dates back to the 1st century AD.

Watch out that in December 2023 when I went it was closed for restoration work. As all the attractions are paid for by the single "Aosta Archeologica" ticket it's worth considering whether it's worth forking out €10 only to find the main attraction closed.

We parked at the start of the walk which was just opposite the Hotel Genzianella.

There was a fairly wide path all the way up to the Lake, although it was slightly uphill - the altitude gain was 92 metres. It was a beautiful walk largely through conifer woods which restricted much of the views until we were not that far from the Lake.

The Lake was small but a beautiful aqua green colour. Unfortunately it started to rain as we were walking up to the Lake and it continued the whole time that we were there so we didn't see any of the reflections from the mountains that others have commented upon. The vistas though were still panoramic. The Lake is fed from the Pietra Rossa Lake and is at an altitude of 2,066 metres.

We decided to walk around the Lake which took about 20 minutes. There is a bridge to cross at one end whilst at the other end you walk across stepping stones in the water. The walk around it though is easy and flat.

    Lovely outing.

This Roman gateway dates back incredibly to 25 BC. There are two arches and also fortified towers.

Today it still functions as a walkway along the main drag of the town, and has a tourist information office and a restaurant inside.

Such a simple place with such an interesting history. It does require managing a few steps but worth it. At the end is a presentation video that explains so much and brings the whole town into relevance.
