This is an amazing place! I recommend getting there with a long walk from Calamoresca so that you can see one of the most beautiful places of Tuscany! Bring your lunch and enjoy the day and the sea!

Not only this is an interesting building from an architectural point of view, but the vistas from up the tower are incredible! Worth a visit!

We walked some paths within the northern sector of the Piombino promontory, on a beautiful March Sunday, and we keep a beautiful memory of it.
It was a ring route, which was held as a guided group. For the route, about 7.5 Kms in length and with a total uphill difference of about 175 mts, we spent about 6.5 hours: a very large time, because it included both many stops, in which the guide has explained the environmental and historical place's features, both the long stop for eating our packed lunch (carry also water enough!) and for the resting on the "Cala di San Quirico" rocky beach.
Our route started from the "Reciso" car park, a few dozen mts downstream of "Populonia alta" village, and first walked the #300 path up to the San Quirico ruined church; from there it diverted to the west and to the sea, passing through the ruins of a monastery (named from San Quirico as well) and following the #303 path; at the junction - already near the sea - with #302 path it followed it northwards; finally, at the junction with the #301 path it followed it up to the return to the parking lot.
A printable map of these paths, summary but sufficient for orientation, can be found on the website "vivipiombinoelavaldicornia.com".
Most of the route took place in the thick and shady Mediterranean scrub (which allows this route even in the height of summer). In the area surrounding the "Cala Di San Quirico" and "Buca delle fate" coves, the route is a bit less shadowed, but it also allows gorgeous vews on promontory's cliffs, on the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the Islands: by clear weather, you can see perfectly, as well as all of Elba Island, the island of Capraia and Corsica.
Obviously, we highly recommend this route.

Across the uneven square is this tiny church. It is elegant in its simplicity. Inside the interior is almost sparse in comparison to most Italian churches but it has a quiet, crepuscular calm. Free to enter.

Although in italian we were able to follow mass on Sunday. Parking is in front of the church, not difficult to find, we reach it just asking for the church. Mass was at 6pm summer time, obviously was hot, but trousers and no flip flops please.

The house itself is interesting, as it is uncommon for its shape and for its location. During the summer period, a local association organizes free art exhibitions inside.

It is close to another strange house, the "whale house", which is private and cannot be visited.

This is a museum that houses papers and artifacts of Napoleon. The entrance fee was only ā‚¬1.00 to see old historic documents, death mask and hand plus uniform. The display is small but comprehensive.

The term "rivellino" (ravelin) refers to a fortification work, typical of the era when firearms are the norm, which is built close to another fortress, to increase its effectiveness.
Within this category, then, ravelins can have the most different shapes. For example, they can be completely detached from the pre-existing works, and in any case they repair these from artillery shots (in this case the ravelins often have a triangle shape). Or they can - as in the case of Piombino - be attached to the pre-existing fortress, forming a whole with it.
In the latter case, being the old and new fortresses a unique thing, it is easier the conservation of the one up to our days also entails the conservation of the other.
The Piombino complex clearly consists of three elements: the tower on the side facing the interior of the ancient city, which even dates back to remote 1212; the square courtyard added at the beginning of the fifteenth century, with an "antiport"; the real ravelin - with its mighty square boulders - finished about a century later.
I didn't understand if the square courtyard also served as a "trap" for the besiegers who had broken through the first defenses and had deluded themselves into entering the city (there are examples of these architectures already from classical Greece: I remember the Messene walls and Eurialo Castle in Syracuse). The arches opened towards the city center in the perimeter of the courtyard would seem to exclude it; but not enough news on this topic.
Overall, the whole fortress is such as to attract the attention of even the unaware visitor. For those who understand a bit of military history, this succession of different eras and techniques is further interesting
