A laid back medieval old town center with great restaurants and stores. Part of the old walls are still standing. A great place to stroll and relax.

Not a very big castle/residence, doesn’t take too long to visit. Decoration is sparse but in good shape. It is a little dark in some places and many of the paintings could use better lighting to stand out more.

I must say that I despair at previous reviews that suggest that an ancient square (and I assume the rest of the historic area) are somehow “weirdly out of place in the hustle and bustle of the city centre”. It’s called history - and there’s lots of in in Europe.

This fabulous square is one of the two adjoining main squares in the old town. It contains a splendid church and has many other impressive and attractive buildings. As one would expect it also contains plenty of cafes and restaurants and is a major part of the city’s social scene.

A must visit area if you are in Guimaraes.

This was a great hike up to the park (lots of steep inclines on both cobblestones and steps) with plenty of time enjoying all the gorgeous landscape and historical buildings. Be sure to find the fountain of youth (push the button below the leaf for the water to come out!). This is great for couples or families. We spent over an hour just walking around at the top before we hiked back down to Guimaraes.

This place is well worth visiting. The views are great! The cable car was fun! It’s great to visit the original capital of Portugal and understand the history of this beautiful country!

The Teleferico is easy to find and is just off the city centre.

I must admit that it was a longer journey up than I thought and I can’t imagine ever wanting to do it on foot. As such, the round trip cost of 7.50 Euros is decent value.

At the top, the area is widespread with lots of pathways to explore, so it is certainly worth a trip.

This town is worth a visit when you are in the northern part of Portugal. We parked our car at the castle and started walking from there. You can spend a few nice hours in one of the oldest towns of Portugal. Visit the old quarter and the palacio del duçes.

While you are in Portugal, you are get used to the gothic churches with tonnes of goad. But this is something different. Built in the modern style, this hill top church hasn't got many attendees, and especially with this fact you've got that reverence feeling.

Well worth a visit if you’re into this type of thing. Bring appropriate footwear, not flip flops or sandal friendly. Would advise reading up on the ruins ahead of the visit as information there is not too detailed (and hard to follow).

Situated next to the Placa D'Oliveira, Praca de Sao Tiago is just as nice and has a fine collection of attractive old buildings in its own right.

Along with its adjacent partner it forms the social hub of the old town and is a great place to come for a wander, a meal, or just a drink at one of the many cafes.
