Getting Around San Juan

Due to its location near the harbor, the old city of San Juan has the ferry option of transportation, in addition to the usual bus and taxi alternatives. The bus stops are marked 'Parada' and the numbers B-21, and A-5 are the ones to look for when sightseeing. Driving can prove difficult, so the rented car might not be advisable due to extremely limited parking around the city. San Juan flights also link with the city's rapid transit system called 'Tren Urbano'; but this surprisingly doesn't service downtown, so is only really applicable if you are looking to explore the outskirts.

There is a lot of history in the city, which can be seen in the El Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the 16th century citadel, and the El Castillo de San Cristobal, the ancient fort. Ateneo de Puerto Rico and La Princesa are museums packed with fascinating items, both right in downtown. Of course being a port means that there are beaches very close by, with those at Condado and Isla Verde probably the best to visit. Central Park is the main public open space, although there are several others that present a pleasant alternative.
