I arranged a guide at the lodge on Zambia side and everything was very smooth. One car to the border and help with the immigration and a guide waiting on the Zimbabwe side. For me it was great with the guide as it gave me more information about the falls.
Everything took around 4 hours in total from lodge and back but i might have been lucky with immigration.
A lot of people are walking but with a time pressure you should arrange it up front with driver and guide.
No, there are no places to eat right around the lodge. And it would be dangerous to go outside the lodge grounds because of all the wild animals around. However, the (free) hotel shuttles into Victoria Falls are frequent so that you can take one of those in for meals and then return by another shuttle - or taxi. In the town, it’s very safe.
Yes there are many places to eat in and outside of the VF lodge. All of the restaurants or cafes we dined at were great. Safety wasn’t an issue. Of course wherever you travel these days there are precautions to take just use common sense.
