The hotel is really well located in the main plaza of Besalu. We left our car outside the center on a free parking and walked for 5 minutes. The room as clean, with one unpleasant exception - that was dealt with right away! Our room was nice and had a great view. In our whole "Besalu experience" (hotel, restaurants, ice cream parlors, etc), no one was rude or unpleasant, but we felt like people are more quiet, lacking a bit of enthusiasm, or just don't want to be pushy to the clients. We just have to keep in mind that this is in a small town where nothing happens, so don't keep expectations too high.

We sat down outside in the winter sun and a male waiter with a long pony tail called Ramon took our drinks order in midstride and in a very rude almost aggressive manner. 20 minutes later nothing came. When I enquired inside the rude manager shouted that I needed to wait 30 minutes to order. I explained in Catalan that we had already ordered but he told me in Spanish he didnt take the order so it isnt is problem. 20 minutes later a man called Oswaldo appeated and told us they had no alcohol free beer. We canceled our order and left. We had ordered water and the waiter was holding water in his hand while telling the table next to us there was no water.

The hotel is situated in a pleasant square with various restaurants. Access to the hotel is via narrow roadways. Be mindful of traffic, including speeding cyclists. Reception staff have very little English. There is a bar behind reception. There is a lift. I had room 104 which had a jacuzzi, but no bath plug. The room had a small window and twin beds. In the morning I went to check out at 07.50 and settle my account. There was no staff. The bar area had not been cleared since I left at 10pm. I waited till 8am, left my room pass, and went to catch my transport.

We checked into this hotel for one night at the beginning of April. There seemed to be no other options in town that night, but I was slightly wary of this hotel, as previous reviews I had read had been somewhat unfavourable. I was nonetheless happy when they said that they had a room available and they gave us the key so that we could go to inspect it (quite rare this, in my experience). We went with some trepidation, but the room was large with a good bathroom and TWO balconies on adjacent walls. It was on the second floor and had good views over the main square. The manner of the receptionist was perhaps a little abrupt, as she explained that they did not take credit cards, that the rate did not include breakfast and that they did not unlock the front door until 9 in the morning. But some people are just like that and she managed a smile when we said that the room was ‘muy bonito’; ‘very nice’. The room was comfortable, although it was odd that the sheets seemed to be not quite the right size for the bed. We fixed this by remaking the bed with the sheets turned through 90 degrees: they were then fine. We did not have breakfast as there was no indication what breakfast was and what it would cost and anyway we also needed an early start for the day - and the hotel breakfast starting at 9 was too late for us. The cost of the room was €72.01 for the night, which was good value for that room. When I looked up our room (201) I saw that it was listed as a ‘junior suite’ Recommended.

Besalu is a lovely out-of-the-way place, very attractive with beautiful mediaeval buildings, and this hotel is right on the central square. Rather than scrabble around finding fault with the bathroom fittings as some travellers seem to do, we enjoyed our comfortable stay here and would definitely recommend the hotel.

The outside of this hotel is attractive, and it's right on the square in lovely Besalu, but I'd suggest finding someplace else to stay if you can (we couldn't -- everything was booked). Our room was very spacious, with high ceilings. The bathroom had a tub and one of those hand showers, so a little inconvenient, but not such a big deal. My major complaint is that when I tried to sleep, there was a distinct smell emanating from someplace (the mattress? the pilllow?) of cat urine. It was pretty awful. Other reviewers have mentioned problems with the staff, but the woman we dealt with was perfectly nice; I think the problem may simply be that her English is minimal. I don't consider that a problem, honestly. It's Spain. People speak Spanish. The hotel shows signs that at some point it aspired to be nicer than it is, and maybe it will get there (there's a patio out back, but it's just a smoking area at the moment, and it's a mess), but it needs a bit of an overhaul.

Let's start from the premise that this is a FOUR STAR hotel under Spain's rating system. Yet -- foul odor in reception at check in, dingy room, mold in bathtub (see photos), scratchy sandpaper towels, paper thin sheets and no mattress cover so blue mattress was clearly visible under the sheet, bottom sheet too small to cover top or sides of stained mattress. Both young women at reception (one at check in and one later at night) were indifferent at best. By far the worst of our 9 hotels in Catalonia, and one of the crappiest I've stayed in anywhere. Fortunately, we were here only one night, to have dinner at Els Fogons de Can Llaudes, a charming restaurant across the plaza, see my TA review.

We showed up in Besalu without hotel reservations and was referred to this hotel by a local resident we stopped on the street. The front desk could not have been more patient with our request to look at about 10 different rooms before we decided to stay there for 2 nights and chose the 2 rooms we liked the best with the corner views of the square and church. The rates were very reasonable and the location of the hotel could not have been any better within the village. Walking distance to everything. We did not get the breakfast from the hotel so we could not comment on it. Wifi worked well in our room as we were right above the lobby area. Dual paned windows made it very quiet at night.

We stayed with a group of 20 people for 4 days and we where surprised of the very good service and hospitality by the staff. The breakfast was beoynd our expectations and the nice girl in the reception even went out to buy us fresh fruits. The rooms are excellent - well cleaned and good condition. Keep in mind this is a quiet village and you can not expect wifi, service and english to work as in a big tourist city. But on the other hand, is it that just the reason to go to Besalú instead of else where?

As other reviewers have commented great location in a lovely old town. Rooms look like down market Travel Lodge. No English spoken - you can get by a little in French. We had a surprisingly good meal in the evening. Breakfast average. WIFI?! Could be so much better.
