Chiado & Carmo Hotels

The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.

A beautiful, interesting and walkable city.
We have just returned from a two night stay in Lisbon en route to a stay with friends further south. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful and interesting city. Lisbon is a very walkable city albeit with some challenging inclines. You must explore the Alfama district but be prepared to get lost then be enthralled by views over the city below. We used the Metro and Main Line Train to visit Belem but otherwise walked everywhere, covering 12miles in the day. The history and viewing the heritage sites are well worth the exercise. There are many excellent cafes, bars and restaurants all reasonably priced. We had a memorably delicious evening meal at the famous Sao Bento steak restaurant. Go there if you can. Can't wait to go back.

    A Beautiful part of Lisbon.
What can I say! We love Lisbon and stayed in the beautiful and perfectly located Chiado area. Close to everything that you need and so central, it’s an absolutely perfect spot for seeing the sights of Lisbon. Lovely bars and restaurants and not far from the Time Out market and the castle.

Charming area in Lisbon to spend time
Chiado is a quaint little neighbourhood between Bairro Alto and Baixa Pombalina that has something of a Bohemian feel to it with lots of boutique shops, cute eateries, bars, bookshops, squares lined with Calcada portuguesa, playful statues as well as nice monuments (Luis de Camoes) and a handful of attractive historic churches. It is a good area to spend some time wandering, shopping, dining and just having a good time. We spent a couple days sightseeing in the area and also popped over during other afternoons and evenings for rounds of drinks and a couple meals during our recent visit to Lisbon.

    Beautiful area
It's a beautiful area of Lisbon. Even though I am portuguese, I never get tired of walking around those streets. Plenty of tourists but still very authentic. Various nice cafés, good restaurants, and beautiful shops. Careful though with the Chiado Eyeglass Factory in Rua Garrett. They sell most of the international brands of sun glasses but extremely overpriced.

Vibrant and atmospheric area of Lisbon
We walked through this beautifully vibrant area of Lisbon with its many bars restaurants and shops. The odd street performance also appeared. The only negative here are some of the dodgy restaurants who get you in and promise the world but then claim at the end they only accept cash. We saw several groups cop this

    Upmarket and more original
Rising uphill from the tourist oriented Baixa this neighborhood has more interesting shops and restaurants. The joint metro station opens up high on the Chiado side where the tramline also travels. Even in late Autumn rain people sit in the dark on the terraces watching live street performancies.

Great area to stay in Lisbon!
This is a great area to stay in when visiting Lisbon. Lots of restaurants, cafes, and shopping. We walked all over. We made our way down to the Praca do Comercio, if that is what you call it - the big square by the water. From there, we were tired and wanted to keep exploring in another area. So, we started looking for a Tuk Tuk. Many went by, but it was actually difficult to get one that wasn't already full. So, we walked back to the street and just stood there for a bit and waited to hail one that was available. This was a fun mode of transportation. Our driver was telling us all about the area as we went. He was a little wild which was part of the fun. It wasn't expensive either and it was a quick way to get around.

  • Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores Hotels
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

Enjoy a cocktail, discover a jazz club, hit the dance floor or simply grab a beer and catch up with your friends in the street: Bairro Alto, Bica and Cais do Sodré are the core of it all. Amazing rooftops, restaurants, cafes, bars, art galleries, museums and theaters abound. Whether you're visiting for a day or a whole week, make sure you visit Bairro Alto and its surroundings.

  • Parque das Nações Hotels
This neighborhood was built up at the end of the 1990s mostly because of the Expo '98. The pavilions and structures that once were the home of all the Expo's attractions and exhibits are still culturally and artistically significant. In Parque das Nações you'll explore conference and concert pavilions, a shopping center, trendy restaurants and an enjoyable cable car ride you can't miss out on. On top of this, the amazing Lisbon Oceanarium (one of the most spectacular things you'll ever see in the city) will take your breath away: its respect and will to preserve natural wildlife is uncanny. Easily accessible by metro, bus or taxi from the city center, Parque das Nações is highly recommended for anyone who'll spend more than 3 days in the Portuguese capital.

  • Belém Hotels
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

  • Graça & São Vicente Hotels
You can be thankful that most common travel guides don't mention Graça and São Vicente that often. Part of Lisbon's historic center and "Old Town", they feel like independent villages in the capital's center, and more untouched than Alfama. Amazing views, restaurants and parks, as well as important monuments like the S. Vicente Church and the National Pantheon, make this a spectacular option for those looking for a more tranquil walk-around in the center of Lisbon. Graça has been the choice of many younger people over the past years, both nationals and expats, given the cozy feeling of the neighborhood and its hidden secrets.

  • Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria Hotels
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
