I ask my wife that all the time.!!

It is just a short walk from the lay-by to the top of the hill where the Long Barrow is situated. You get stunning views of Silbury Hill as you walk up. The site was fairly quiet when we arrived, maybe ten people at the most. Access is easy. You can also go inside the chamber, which is quite brilliant. There is no entry fee and you can stay there as long as you like. Well worth the trip.
We went for a visit at Kennet Long Barrow
It was really nice to sit there in the dark and feel the energy anf magic
This ancient long barrow is over 5000 years old. It is fairly accessible. There is a lay-by on the A4 marked for the long barrow and from there it is about a 10 minute uphill walk. The alternative is to park in the National Trust car park in Avebury and to walk past Silbury Hill, cross the A4 and then walk up the hill. The long barrow is interesting in that you can enter into part of it. We were particularly lucky to be there when the swallows were nesting within the long barrow and flying around. How long have they been nesting there? Up there you get some good views. It was well worth the walk.
On my first visit here I couldn’t understand why I’d not heard more about it. This is extremely unusual as a Long Barrow (burial mound) that you can actually go into, its set away from the road almost out of sight and if you are fortunate enough to visit alone then it is an almost spiritual experience.
The Long Barrow itself is a short walk up a shallow hill from the A4 with free layby parking (or park at Silbury Hill) and has no charges. My advice would be to time a visit when it is quiet or at sunrise/sunset, although it is still very well worth visiting even if busy.
For a very special visit (for those with nerves of steel), visit at night......
Located on the high of a hill, this place represent a very well preserved tomb of the neolitic age. Also, as there is no car access to it and you need to walk for a while to reach it, it is not crowded. You also can accese to the interior of the tomb a walk along the differebt chambers. I did it on a rainny day and, as there is no light inside the monument, experience was really awesome
