We stayed on Lido, and decided to take a break away from the tourists and have a cycling day in Lido, and to the island next door, Pellestrina. Its a whole 9 euros for a days bike hire (a bit more for the 2 seaters or 4 seaters), no lengthy contracts, but you do have to drop off your passports. We rode down and took the car ferry, across, but a fun easy and cheap way to have a really different experience
Thank you!!
Lido is the perfect flat place to hire a bike. You need photo ID (drivers licence / passport etc) to leave as collateral. Easy process from the pleasant English speaking gentlemen who runs the shop and within a couple of minutes we were the proud renters of a new tandem bike. Use the lock (provided) as advised if leaving the bike alone, and don't lose the key. We paid €20 (April 17 - so not peak season) for the day and had I really good laugh. Highly recommended.
Grazie!!
In deep need of doing something other than eating and crowding in venice,- 2hours og fun. You feel really stupid, but You will Get used to it :)
We chose a nice sunny day to visit the Venice Lido, and decided to rent bikes as soon as we left the vaporetto stop. There were some city bikes just there, but no way to rent them. In the end we determine that they must be reserved for Venetians, but we saw there were two cycle hire shops a short distance away. However, the first was closed, as it was no longer the high season.
The Venice Bike Rental shop was a brief 5 minute walk further along the same road, close to the beach and Adriatic Sea. In fact, there is access to the public beach at the Blue Moon, less than 100m beyond the shop, so you can easily stroll along the sands before or after your cycle.
The shop offered a range of standard bikes to suit all heights as well as tandems and four-seater bikes. Unfortunately, there were no tandems left and the four-seaters would not be so easy on the roads and paths, so we opted for 3 normal bikes.
These were good and worked well, with no technical issues. We were told not to take them on the beach or into the sea, and were given 2 locks to keep the bikes safe if we needed to leave them at any point. Only the largest bike had gears, but they are not really needed as everything is so flat on the island.
We found it easy to cycle about the island. Road traffic was very light and was not a problem. We ended up cycling all the way to the south end of Lido and back to the shop (some 20km) in just under 2 hours, although we did stop a few times. We also regularly use exercise bikes, so didn't suffer later, or was this the large comfy saddles?
You pay on return for the hours used and have to leave ID as a deposit.
The assistant/owner was helpful and gave adequate explanation regarding the bikes and what to do if we had any problems.
As elsewhere in Venice, communication was not a problem and put our Italian language skills to shame.
Thank you!
My partner and I head out to Lido one arvo. Grabbed a couple of bikes from this bloke, who was really friendly, and rode down to the bottom of the island. There we paid an extra two Euro each way for the ferry to the Santa Maria del Mare (still using 72 hr tourist passes) and rode through Pallastrina (beautiful fishing village with a few bars and such) to Caroman and back. Really nice ride, at one stage the path is about a metre wide with a stone wall on one side and the ocean on the other. At the end is a dirty beach, closed off village, some nice forestry and old millitary forts. We had a puncture and the guy was really nice about it. He usually offers a replacement bike (after bussing it back- make sure the flat happens on lido island), but we had finished our ride. Great weather with minimal other tourists in May, took about 4 hours.
Thanks a lot for the good comment, hope to see you again.
Best,Chris
It was a sunny afternoon, and spontaniously my girlfriend and I decided to hire one of Venice Bike Rental's four wheeled two seater pedal powered buggies, it turned out to be our most enjoyable afternoon in Venice.
