Very pleasantly surprised. Ended up in Whitehaven for the day and by chance happened to go to the Rum Story. I wasn’t expecting it to be as big or as interesting as it was, the cellars and the history of both rum and the Jefferson family was fascinating. The section on slavery and just how bad the conditions were was really revealing as was information on their life when they reached their destination. Disabled access throughout which was very surprising for the original warehouses. No parking at the attraction but plenty nearby. Definitely worth a visit!
Thank you very much for taking the time to write us a review. We are glad that you enjoyed your time in Whitehaven. We really are a hidden gem here at The Rum Story. We hope to see you again on your next visit to Whitehaven.
They do not serve food. The kitchen is closed. It was once a nice place with a great selection of food. I remember Phil hazelhurst as cook and manager. There was a girl who cooked great food too. What has happened to a lovely tea room. It's a real shame.
Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. Our Café is still open for both hot and cold drinks and snacks, a reduced menu has been set over the winter period and will be reviewed again in the summer. We hope that you will come visit us again for a cup of local coffee and a home made scone.
Really enjoyed our visit here. Great insight into the history of rum. The slavery boat really brought home how awful slaves were treated. The staff were very friendly. I spent a small fortune on rum goodies from the shop, but been informed from family they were lovely. No parking at the museum, need to park on a council car park, which were expensive, but found that everywhere around the Lake District.
Thank you for your review Sarah. We are glad that you enjoyed your visit to the Lake District. We find that Rum goddies always go down well and make excellent presents to take back home. We hope to see you if you visit Cumbria again in the future.
This place is an inter-active walk through history. I visited Whitehaven with no clue of their historical involvement in the slave trade and this place not only explains it in detail but has managed to design an experience that really hooks you and gets you engaged.
Only upset I didn't have more time! The staff is incredibly nice and the café in there serves great coffee!
Thanks for taking the time to write us a review Ninh. We hope to see you again on your next visit to Cumbria.
This is an attraction I have visited previously, never disappointed, but what a shame that the cafe no longer does meals, sign of the times, they just do tea, coffees and tray bakes, always better than nothing, however, better tea bags would be a good investment, no colour or taste in the tea at the moment.
Thank you for your review Ann and your repeat custom. I have passed your comments about the café over to our Rum Story manager. We always like to hear of ways we can make improvements,
Great place to visit to find out about the town's history! Would recommend staff friendly, cafe on site you will be amazed at the clock in the centre of square.
Thank you for your review Christine. We are glad that you enjoyed your time with us here at the Rum Story and hope to see you again in the future.
