Just back from a week at the Sonnalp with some friends and overall the experience was pretty patchy. Don't expect a 4 star hotel. It certainly is not that. A lot of basics you would expect in any hotel, let alone a 4 star, just weren't there. The management needs to improve the standards considerably. The behaviour of some of the staff was just bizarre.

We arrived at the hotel just before 8.30 pm and had to struggle up the front steps with our ski luggage watched by the reception staff. No one mentioned we could have gone in via the ski room under the hotel and used a lift. We were hurried into the restaurant being told that dinner finished at 9. And it did - literally. Tables were cleared around us a feature which continued throughout the week.

Going to our room the separated twin beds we had specifically asked for were not there and there was just a double bed. On reporting this to reception their frankly astonishing response was to deposit a crumpled sheet in the corner of the settee and leave us to get on with making this into a bed ourselves. They could not have been less interested or helpful. We received an apology and the issue was resolved the following day to our satisfaction but it created a very bad first impression

The food was a self service buffet every night which didn't bear much resemblance to the menu on the table. There was a choice of salads and dressings every night and main dishes then served from stainless steel containers. Some of it very good. Other bits of it less so. Although we went in for dinner pre 8 pm dessert ran out on more than one occasion.

On the whole the waiting staff were pleasant and helpful.

The rooms were fine. Mine was at the front , south facing and had a great view of the slopes. It was a pleasant and spacious double but bits were falling off including door handles and bits of the shower in the ensuite. The room temperature seemed very inconsistent and on occasions downright cold. The supply of hot water in the rooms was equally inconsistent. Don't shower after 5.45 unless you particularly want a cold shower.

The front door was often open which meant a cold draught particularly in the large bar area which was pretty soulless and lacking in atmosphere unfortunately. Not the cosy space you wanted after a dinner which finished promptly at 9 and with little else around the hotel in the way of alternatives.

The young girl serving in the bar who had been there only a few days could not have been more helpful but she had her work cut out trying to cope on her own.

The hotel is not far from one of the main lifts but it is up a very steep slope and would not be easy to walk up or down in ski boots if icy. We took advantage of the shuttle offered for an hour in the morning and afternoon. It takes just a few minutes to the Zwolferkogel lift. The drivers were very pleasant and helpful although one day we waited for 30 mins in extremely cold temperatures and ended up phoning the hotel to find out what had happened. A taxi finally arrived.

I wouldn't stay here again

We had a week here in Feb and it is rated as 4 star. It was quite expensive. The staff were lovely and helpful and the rooms were a nice generous size compared to some I have stayed in. Nice hot bath and showers and bar man very friendly and happy to make tea and hot water for fussy people (as well as cocktails) however I thought the "wellness" area was one of the smallest and uninspirational I have experienced over the years and the food was only very average. I would expect to have table service for a 4* hotel but self service can be handy when you are vegetarian and they don't provide anything for you. One night I was only offered chips 😡 So cold salad bar for me most of the time, which was nice to be fair. A gripe of most breakfasts these days in ski hotels are the coffee machines. Just too small and slow for amount of people. This hotel had a hot water urn and a coffee urn but neither were put on in time so were never hot enough when most people were getting breakfast! Bit disappointing. There is a shuttle service to the nearest lift and on our first day he kindly took us to our ski hire shop too. Lovely resort. Not sure I would stay at this hotel again - not for the price we paid at least.

We stayed here on a Crystal ski holiday over half term in Feb 2018.

The bad
1) No hot water in the evenings; just astonishing for a so called 4 star hotel.
2) the safe was not installed, just left on top of a cupboard;
3) bits falling off the room, skirting boards etc;
4) doors don’t close properly;
5) the bed sounds like it could collapse any minute;
6) a nightmare to carry skis back up a steep and narrow icy road;

The good
1) the snow was superb; of course nothing to do with the hotel
2) the food was passable;
3) the staff were pleasant.

Do yourself a favour and go somewhere that at least has hot water!

Our party arrived with fear and trembling, having scrutinised several abysmal reviews, and received generic, bland and dare I say patronising responses to our concerned approaches to Crystal before we set off. Eventually a resort rep emailed a decent reply, but he was no longer in post by the time we got there! Hmm...
As a non coffee drinker the inadequate coffee machine did not impact upon my enjoyment. The large utilitarian coffee urn provided as well appeared to be ignored by most guests, perhaps the coffee was not good. We understood that a second coffee machine would not be delivered for some time, but what about hiring one? There was a magnificent golden samovar for tea, unfortunately the water was not at times hot enough and the tea not drinkable. A kettle or two would have been helpful. Otherwise we enjoyed the restaurant - plenty of interesting food, and being a buffet one could eat as much of whatever one wanted. Waiter serviced fine dining however this is not. The final night of our stay, our reserved table had been commandeered by other guests, and there was a regrettable uplift of the wine carafe price, in error. The points raised by the last reviewer about high bottle prices are well taken.
The room was large, very clean, and no problems with towels or toilet paper. The bathroom was dataed - some cracked tiles and non functioning mechanicval ventilation but again very clean. Staff all very pleasant and friendly, we liked the bar, the most commodious ski room, the heated pegs for boots. It’s a sprawling hotel which appears to have been stiched together from about 3 large chalets, there are two lifts which are not contiguous, so staircases are unavoidable. The lift serving the upper floors does not work late in the evening, we understand owing to machinery noise near guest bedrooms. Both lifts are very small, and carpet lined - something I’ve never seen except in Grimsby....
The games room is as described, you wouldn’t want to play games in it or let your children loose in there. By contrast the pool are spa are very pleasant, although if you want a sauna you have to take all your clothes off (no thanks) and I can confirm that the steam room is not very steamy.
Our overall impression s that this is a supposedly 4 star hotel but the facilities are rather patchily consistent with this. It would not compare well even to a 3-4 star hotel such as the Schweitzerhof in Lenzerheide, where I had a an excellent and completely comfortable business trip 3 years ago. Having said that, we did not pay 4 star prices - you pays your money and you takes your choice.

Hotel is ok but we have stayed in far better 4* hotels in Austria. I think this is not a 1* disaster or a 5* excellent. There are issues with should have been fixed by now. Dinner day 1 – staff very busy being a Saturday night and hotel was probably full with weekenders. Restaurant is totally self service. After a good half an hour we were ready for main course and still no drinks/wine waiter. Breakfast on Sunday morning - as reported before on TripAdvisor (weeks ago) there was only one hot drinks machine which took about a minute for a half mug. There was a separate hot water urn for tea making but this was not always hot/working so tea drinkers were queued at this one machine. Remember seeing on TripAdvisor report that there was another drinks machine on order but this was back in December – how long does it take to get a drinks machine delivered! Consequently there were at times 8 guests in the drinks queue - suspect this was those who could be bothered to wait 20 to 30 minutes for a cup of coffee. This was reported to the Crystal rep who thought that there should be a separate coffee urn available (this did appear regularly during our stay after the weekend but only after about 30 minutes of the breakfast period which was too late for the many guests who had early breakfast and had to queue).
Wine: We selected a bottle of quite nice red wine on day 1 (actually was the cheapest at 22 euros and very popular with other guests, probably due to the cost). Mysteriously the price of this wine on day 4 went up overnight to 38 euros replaced by an inferior wine at 22. Beware wine prices were in general one bottle at 22, one at 28 then the rest of the wine list was well above 30 euros.
No problems with hotel staff – very friendly and some spoke good English. Mark the barman was excellent.
Hotel is up a steep short incline, can walk it but a bit tiring in boots and carrying skis etc. Hotel taxi service for an hour in morning and afternoon worked well but you needed to be returning in the 3.30 to 4.30 operating hours else walk the 200 yards and climb the hill! Free ski bus worked well and ran every few minutes. Wifi was only available around reception, restaurant and bar. Ski room has plenty of space and heated boot racks although can get busy at peak times. Rooms were decent size and well maintained although bathroom fittings looked a bit tired.

I would have given this a 4* review but because of the issues with the restaurant – mainly the hot drinks at breakfast – I have given it 3*. The hot drinks/coffee issues in particular at breakfast should have been sorted by now. Many hotels have a couple of jugs of coffee on heated plates for their guests – bringing an urn of coffee and hot water out after breakfast has been open for half an hour is not the solution!!
